Real Madrid wanting Trent Alexander-Arnold has been an open secret for some time. Inside the final few months of his Liverpool contract, the Spanish giant has been lurking for a while.

From January 1, Los Blancos – or any other club outside of England – will be able to speak freely with Alexander-Arnold and agree a contract ahead of next summer. Earlier this week, MARCA reported that the player had already decided that he wanted to move to Spain.

Now, while Alexander-Arnold hit back at the noise surrounding him when he scored against West Ham United, The Athletic adds that Real Madrid has made it clear to him what it can offer. A long-term deal of at least four years is obvious, plus a hefty signing-on fee.

While no official contact can be made between clubs and players until January, it would be naive to think that such conversations don’t take place informally. The suggestion is that the Liverpool ace has been given a “proposal” from Real Madrid and he now has to decide what he wants to do with it.

There is a decision to be made too. While it would be easy for Liverpool fans to believe that one of their own should only have eyes on staying given how well things are going under Arne Slot, there is an appeal to playing in another country.

With Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold would be able to play in a different culture, learn a new language, and try and win the biggest prizes with a second big club. Clearly, there are positives to remaining at Anfield as well, but that is what he must weigh up before his Liverpool decision is confirmed.

Liverpool.com says: The reason that Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation wasn’t addressed earlier was because of the change in regime behind the scenes and Jurgen Klopp leaving. Real Madrid would have been an option on the table then too, though, so it might not have influenced the outcome either way. The chatter is going to continue and get louder the longer it goes without a resolution being announced, which is a far from ideal situation as the Reds chase multiple trophies.
