Tributes paid to stalwart of Cumbrian rugby club who will be ‘missed beyond measure’

TRIBUTES have been paid to a stalwart of rugby league in Cumbria who will be ‘missed beyond measure’ at Whitehaven RLFC.

Des Byrne, a stalwart of Whitehaven Rugby League ,who served for many years in roles such as Chairman, Director and Team Manager, died yesterday, January 14.

Whitehaven RLFC have paid tribute to Des, saying that his ‘unwavering loyalty to all things Whitehaven RLFC shone through at any opportunity’.

In a statement on social media, Whitehaven Rugby League Club said: “All at and associated with Whitehaven RLFC would like to send out deepest condolences to the Byrne family.

“Des was and forever will be a part of this great club. He’s unwavering loyalty to all things Whitehaven shone through at any opportunity.

“Des was a chairman, a director and our team manager there wasn’t anything about the club he didn’t know. He became someone that each year players and staff would turn to for guidance. Words are tough to find for a man like Des but there’s one thing we can all agree on he will be missed beyond measure.

“Our love goes to Margaret, Vikki and Anna at this difficult time you’re all in our thoughts.”

In his working life Des was a key member of Whitehaven CID for the best part of 30 years before his retirement in 2001.
