Two more flood warnings issued by Environment Agency as people urged to ‘act now’

Two more flood warnings have been issued near Greater Manchester – with people in the affected areas urged to ‘act now’.

Two Met Office weather warnings remain in force across the region – for heavy rain and snow and ice, with a third in place for Tuesday (January 7).

Earlier on Monday, the Environment Agency said the two flood warnings have been issued ‘as a precaution’ due to ‘damage to an embankment associated with the River Mersey Didsbury flood basin’. Flood warnings mean flooding is expected in a given area.

One warning covers the River Mersey at Cheadle Wood and Ford Lane, covering Parrs Wood High School and Heaton Mersey Valley Golf Course in Stockport.

The second covers the Mersey at Fletcher Moss and Withington Golf Course. Land adjacent to the River Mersey at West Didsbury together with Withington golf course, properties on Stenner lane, near the rugby Club, the allotments and Fletcher Moss Park are all said to be at risk.

Now, two further flood warnings have been issued near Dunham and Lymm, on the Cheshire border. One warning covers the areas at and around Bollington Mill and Bollington Hall Farm. Also at risk is property on Lymm Road adjacent to Agden Brook.

The second includes land and properties adjacent to the Ship Canal and River Bollin, Reddish Hall, and some properties on Rushes avenue, Birch Brook Road and Chaise Meadow. Property on Old Mill Lane.

Two other flood alerts – meaning flooding is possible – remain in force elsewhere in Greater Manchester, for the middle River Mersey catchment, including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston.

The alerts state that the Environment Agency is “monitoring the situation.”

Manchester City Council said: “The situation is improving in Didsbury and no further flooding is expected. A Flood Alert remains in place for the wider area so please continue to take extra care and avoid low-lying footpaths and bridges next to the river.”

Stockport Council said a flood warning remains in place for the River Mersey at Cheadle Wood and Ford Lane. It added: “It has been issued as a precaution due to damage to an embankment associated with the River Mersey Didsbury flood basin.

“River levels are rising due to heavy rainfall – with more forecast today. Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water and avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.”
