Warning issued after ‘concerning’ number of kids play on ice at Hammonds Pond

Carlisle East Fire Station have issued a warning after receiving ‘concerning reports’ of children playing on the ice at Hammonds Pons.

There have been numerous sightings of children running on the ice and the fire station has warned of the dangers which can happen on frozen water.

There have been regular patrols round the pond by firefighters and police officers but Carlisle East Fire Station said that is was ‘concerning’ to see large groups of youths at the pond ‘encouraging each other’ to go onto the ice.

A spokesperson for Carlisle East Fire Station said: “We have had concerning reports from the schools around Hammonds Pond, that children have been playing on the frozen water.

“This is extremely dangerous, and the ice is unpredictable and very thin in some places- made harder to see by the thin covering of frost on the ice.

“Please could parents speak to their children and educate them on the extreme dangers of playing on frozen bodies of water.

“Ourselves and Carlisle Police have been down to the pond patrolling and engaging with the children around there, but it was concerning the amount of large groups hanging around the pond, getting rowdy and encouraging each other to go onto the ice.

“Please speak to your children about this, and share the post if you live in the local area.”
