Warning issued to East Lancs residents ahead of freeze-thaw to keep homes safe

United Utilities has issued a warning to North West residents to protect their pipes from upcoming freeze-thaw.

The water company advises checking and insulating pipes to prevent potential bursts and leaks as temperatures fluctuate.

Freezing temperatures can cause pipes to freeze, leading to bursts or leaks when they thaw.

After a week of sub-zero temperatures, the Met Office is predicting the mercury will rise next week, hitting nine of 10 degrees, which could see the remaining ice and snow left across East Lancashire rapidly melt and thaw out.

The company urges people to use the “PIPE” method: Prepare, Insulate, Protect, Easy.

First, insulating pipes with lagging, especially those in cold areas like garages, cellars, and outside, can prevent freezing.

Loft pipes can also benefit from insulation to avoid problems caused by thawing.

United Utilities suggested knowing where the stop tap is, keeping a plumber’s contact handy, and regularly checking for household leaks to prevent major issues.

The company also emphasised the potential damage and stress caused by burst and leaking pipes, which can result in costly and time-consuming repairs.

Being prepared can reduce the impact of flooding from burst pipes.

For those dealing with burst pipes, United Utilities advises locating the stop tap, usually under the kitchen sink, and turning it clockwise to stop the water.

After this, turn off the heating, open all taps to drain the system, and soak up any escaping water with towels.

Residents are also advised to check their insurance cover for leaks and bursts or to contact a plumber.

If water leaks near electrics, these should be switched off at the mains.
