Police have issued a warning to motorists who leave their car engines running in the cold weather, after a spate of thefts.
Chorley Police said thieves have used the cold snap as a chance to steal vehicles. Over the weekend “a number of thefts” have been reported by people who have left their engine running and their vehicle unattended.
Drivers could also be handed a fine as it is an offence to unnecessarily leave the engine running, even when windows are icy.
A police spokesperson said: “We’ve been hit by some severe cold temperatures over the last few days. The cold snap has brought with it thieves looking for opportunities to steal vehicles.
“Over the weekend, there have been several thefts reported to us by people who have left their engine running and their vehicle unattended. Don’t give thieves an easy ride.
“When de-frosting your car, please do not leave your keys in the ignition or the engine running.
“Do not leave any valuables, like mobile phones, wallets, laptops or gadgets in your car.
“Do not leave any money or loose change in your vehicle (even a small amount can make you a possible target).
“Make sure any CCTV/video doorbells are in full working order to assist us in our investigation to successfully prosecute offenders.
“Did you know that leaving your engine running while your motor is stationary on the road could land you in hot water?
“Under section 42 of the Road Traffic Act, it is an offence to unnecessarily leave the engine running on a vehicle parked on a public road and could lead to a fixed penalty notice.”
