A major road was closed for more than four hours after a suspected drink driver crashed into trees. Emergency services descended on the A628 Woodhead Road, in Tintwistle, at 5.20pm on Thursday (January 16).
Police say a Volkswagen Golf crashed into ‘some trees’ off the road. Fire crews rescued the driver before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.
A major closure was put in place on the Woodhead Pass between New Road, in Tintwistle, and the B6105 at Woodhead. Derbyshire Police says the driver, a man in his 30s, suffered injuries in the smash and was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said: “We received reports of a collision on the A628 Woodhead Road, Tintwistle, at 5.20pm on Thursday, January 16. The incident involved a VW Golf which left the road and collided with some trees.
“A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and was taken to hospital due to injuries sustained in the collision. The road was closed while the incident was dealt with.”
Recovery vehicles arrived on the scene at 9.20pm. National Highways confirmed the road had reopened shortly after 10pm.
A spokesperson for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service added: “At 5.23pm on Thursday, January 16, firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on Woodhead Road in Tintwistle. Derbyshire crews from Glossop, supported by colleagues from Greater Manchester’s Marple station, attended the scene.
“On arrival, crews found an adult male trapped in a vehicle. Firefighters made the vehicle safe and extricated the adult male from the vehicle.
“The casualty was handed into the care of paramedics and conveyed to hospital. Fire crews left the scene at 7.22pm and handed over to Derbyshire Police.”
