A yellow weather warning for wind is in place for most of Cumbria today, with transport disruption expected nationwide.
The Met Office’s warning covers most of the county, as well as much of the northeast and south and central Scotland.
In Cumbria, the A66 is partially closed both ways to high-sided and vulnerable vehicles because of the strong winds, and the Windermere Ferry isn’t running.

They have also issued a yellow weather warning for rain in parts of the northwest like Cheshire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Lancashire, as well as most of Wales.

Almost every part of the UK is covered by at least one of multiple Met Office weather warnings between Monday and Wednesday.
On New Year’s Eve, an amber rain warning is in force in the Highlands and Moray until 5pm and a yellow warning for snow and rain covers most of Scotland until midnight, which ‘may bring significant disruption in the build-up to new year’.

Forecasters said delays to all types of transport are ‘likely’ on New Year’s Eve as strong winds persist and may reach speeds of up to 70mph in parts of England and Northern Ireland.
Cumbria Constabulary reminded people to take extra care on the roads today and be aware of the possibility of fallen trees and branches on the road.
There are no weather warnings for Cumbria on New Year’s Day.
